2014 Thumbies Categories

We're prepping to record our 2014 Thumbies episode on Monday, 12/29 and I thought it might be useful to keep a more accurate record of our awards and the changes year to year. During episode 179, we agreed to the following changes to this year's categories:

  • Added "Steamy Turd" award
  • Split "Best Handheld/Mobile Game" into two categories
  • Dropped "Guilty Pleasure" award
  • Added "Game I Refuse to Play"
  • Added "Most Valuable Console" award
  • Rephrased "Best New IP" award to "Best New IP I Want to See More of"
  • Added "Best Remaster/Re-release" award

With those changes in mind, here are the categories for 2014's Thumbies:

2014's 2013 Game of the Year: Awarded to last year's game that best exemplifies Game of the Year qualities this year.

Best Co-op Multiplayer Game: Awarded to the best cooperative multiplayer game (online or otherwise).

Best Competitive Multiplayer Game: Awarded to the best competitive multiplayer game (online or otherwise).

Best Handheld Game: Awarded to the best game on handheld devices (3DS, Vita, etc.).

Best Mobile Game: Awarded to the best game on Mobile devices (iOS, Android, etc.).

Best Rainy Day Game: Awarded to the game that best exemplifies the qualities one looks for in a game on a rainy day.

Biggest Surprise: Awarded to the game whose quality is most surprising.

Biggest Disappointment: Awarded to the game whose quality is most disappointing.

Steamy Turd: Awarded to the game that exemplifies the qualities (lack thereof) of a steamy turd.

Best Under the Influence Game: Awarded to the game that is most benefiting to play under the influence of substance(s).

Game I Refuse to Play: Awarded to the game we did not play, and do not plan to play because of our own justifications.

Best New IP I Want to See More of: Awarded to the best game featuring new intellectual property that we would like to see sequels/spinoffs for.

Best Remaster, Re-release: Awarded to the best game released in a previous year that is re-released/remastered this year for new platforms.

Best Indie Game: Awarded to the best game developed and published independent from the big hitters.

Most Valuable Console: Awarded to the console we feel is most valuable over the course of the year.

Game of the Year: Awarded to the best overall game of the year.
